Kakuma
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Kakuma is located in the north-west of Kenya, in a remote and arid region near the border with South Sudan. The people here live under difficult conditions, marked by poverty, heat and only patchy infrastructure. The Kakuma Mission Hospital is the most important medical point of contact in the entire region and thus the only hope of medical care for countless families. Together with our partner Malteser Hilfsdienst e.V., we are committed to fundamentally improving local healthcare. Because access to safe surgical procedures is of fundamental importance in the long term — it decides over life and death, especially for mothers and children.
The Kakuma Mission Hospital is currently in a critical condition and faces the following challenges:
- Lack of surgical capacity: The clinic has no fully functional operating room.
- Long distances in emergencies: Critical surgical cases must be referred more than 150 km away to Lodwar.
- Preventable deaths: Pregnant women, mothers and children in particular are at risk due to the lack of emergency care.
We are delighted to have the opportunity, together with Malteser Hilfsdienst e.V., to sustainably improve the lives of mothers and children in this region — through the construction and equipping of a new delivery room with surgical capability as well as the renovation of the existing operating room at the Kakuma Mission Hospital.
PLANNED STRUCTURAL AND MEDICAL MEASURES
Thanks to the planned measures, around 2,000 children aged 0 to 15 as well as expectant mothers will benefit each year from modern, safe medical care on site. They gain access to life-saving procedures without having to undertake the gruelling journey to Lodwar.
- Construction of a new delivery room with surgical capability
- Renovation of the existing operating room
- Equipment including operating table, surgical lighting and anaesthesia machine
- Installation of sterilisers and patient monitors
- Provision of surgical instruments
- Professional construction supervision and continuous on-site monitoring
