New kitchen for child care and training

At the Barack Obama Senior Centre for Knowledge Learning and Excellence, run by the Auma Obama Foundation in Sauti Kuu, meals for children were previously cooked in an open kitchen outside. Thanks to the installation of the new kitchen with industrial equipment, meals can be prepared on a larger scale for 300 children from the nine surrounding partner schools. Local companies were commissioned for the construction in order to involve the whole community.

The Auma Obama Foundation also offers workshops on nutrition in the new SIXT Kitchen in Sauti Kuu. Children and their parents learn about food hygiene, healthy eating, food preparation and preservation. Through this offer, the centre is addressing the high level of malnutrition and the resulting stunting among children in the surrounding community. The workshops held in the Sixt Kitchen teach children and parents how to prepare healthy, nutritious meals using locally available food and thus reduce malnutrition. Many of the ingredients come directly from the garden next to the kitchen.

“I am satisfied with the food and nutrition workshop. I had the opportunity to interact with the children and to teach and learn a lot. For example, together with other parents, I taught the children the names and uses of traditional Luo dishes and how to prepare them. I don't cook at home, but now I am faced with the challenge of doing it with my sons. I am impressed by the newly built modern kitchen.” – Michael, father from Sauti Kuu
