Together against hunger

THE VILLAGE OF KINAKONI IN KENYA IS SEARCHING FOR FUTURE SOLUTIONS

Defeating hunger and building a common future – this is the dream of the 5,000 inhabitants of the village of Kinakoni in southeastern Kenya, 250km from Nairobi, as well as another residents of the region, County Kitui. Thanks to an initiative by Welthungerhilfe and the stern foundation, this hope could soon become reality. Together with the villagers of Kinakoni, the structural background of the hunger is to be worked through, explained by way of example and medium-term solutions found that can also be used in other surrounding villages.

The solutions should not come from Europe. Kenyan agricultural researchers are helping to find solutions that are specifically tailored to the local conditions. Tech start-ups from Nairobi are also participating in the project and want to use their knowledge to pave the way for progress in the village.

The project is initially planned for three years. Within this period, the villagers of Kinakoni should be given the tools to earn their own living. If you want to alleviate hunger, you also have to tackle other problems. Strengthening the rights of women, for example - or giving the children of the region a chance for a better education. The Regine Sixt Children's Aid Foundation is therefore supporting the project with the extensive renovation of the Kinakoni Primary School.

Kinakoni elementary school classroom

Kinakoni Primary School was built in 1967 and is one of the oldest schools in Kyamatu/Voo ward in Kitui East sub-county, Kitui County. It is located on a plot of land measuring almost 19 hectares. The condition of the school is precarious. The building is very outdated and dilapidated, meaning that some rooms can hardly be used. Some of the furniture is also barely usable and there is no internet. This has led to a significant drop in pupil numbers.

Training is also provided on child hygiene, sanitation and life skills. The pupils learn how to grow high-quality horticultural crops and nutrition training in separate workshops. In collaboration with tech start-ups from Nairobi, the project also aims to enable digital learning in schools.
